From the November 5, 1993 Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch:
"Betty Devine , wife of former U.S. Rep. Samuel L. Devine , died yesterday in Riverside Methodist Hospitals after an off-and-on battle with cancer for seven years.
She was admitted to the hospital seven weeks ago suffering from bone cancer after recovering from an episode of colon cancer.
The Devines lived in Naples, Fla., but maintained a residence in Upper Arlington.
Mrs. Devine , 77, performed her social duties as the wife of a politician, but she was more inclined to be a homemaker - "a good wife and mother with a good heart," Mr. Devine said during one of the twice-a-day visits he has made since his wife was hospitalized.
A native of Marysville, Ohio, she graduated from Ohio State University in 1938 with a degree in home economics.
She was named queen of the Makio (OSU's yearbook) in 1936. "That's a long time ago," Mr. Devine said. "But it was kind of important."
Her husband served three terms as a state representative and was Franklin County prosecutor before he was first elected to Congress in 1958. He was unseated in the 1980 election by Bob Shamansky.
Mr. Devine represented the 12th District of Ohio that included eastern Franklin, Delaware and Morrow counties.
Some were more familiar with Mr. Devine 's activities in the sports arena than those in politics. He ran with track great Jesse Owens at OSU and was a football official for more than 20 years. His last game was the 1971 Citrus Bowl when he reached the Big 10 retirement age of 55.
He received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1940, passed the Ohio bar the same year and joined the FBI. He served five years as a special agent.
"1940 was a pretty good year," he said. He also got married on Aug. 24 of that year. .
Mrs. Devine devoted much of her spare time to working for the Columbus Cancer Clinic's thrift shop. Organizations she belonged to included the D.A.R. and Colonial Dames.
Mr. Devine said his wife slipped into a coma Wednesday night and doctors told him she was not expected to live much longer. At that time, their daughter was preparing to fly here from England.
Mr. Devine was hoping Morrell could see her mother alive. "Betty has been a tough soldier," he said. "She'll hold on." But Mrs. Devine died about 11 a.m., eight hours before her daughter's flight arrived. Most of the rest of her family were with Mrs. Devine .
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Rd. A memorial service will be held at the chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday. A private funeral will be Monday in Marysville.
Contributions in Mrs. Devine 's memory can be made to the Cancer Clinic or a favorite charity."
