On the 1900 census, age 10, Davis was listed as living with his family on a farm in Cummington, Massachusetts, near the farm ("the Arunah Bartlett place") of his uncle and aunt, Walter and Nellie Stone, and their children. On the 1910 census, age 20, he was living with his family on Maple Street in Plainfield, Massachusetts, and was working as a house carpenter.

In the years 1911-1913 he lived with his sister, Evelyn Stone Warriner, and her family at 15 Prospect Avenue, Northampton, Massachusetts, and was working as a carpenter, probably with his brother-in-law, Justin Bliss Warriner, who was also a carpenter.

By 1914 Davis had moved and was living with his parents on Draper Avenue in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

On 17 February 1920 he married Amanda Lewis Stewart at Saint John's Episcopal Church in North Adams, Massachusetts (Amanda's home town). Davis was 30 years old, Amanda was 32, and it was the first marriage for both; witnesses were Helen Jane Stewart (Amanda's sister) and Fred Leslie Bradford (Amanda's sister Charlotte's husband)(St. John's parish register, vol. 5). Davis gave his occupation as "Army Transport Service" and his residence as Hillsdale, New Jersey. (He cannot be located in the 1920 census, nor in any military records, however.)

Davis and Amanda were second cousins through her father's mother's sister, Mary E. Ackert, first wife of Ward N. Stone of Peru, Massachusetts (Mary and Ward were Davis' grandparents).

The couple moved to New Hyde Park, Long Island (Nassau County), New York. In 1922 they lived on Second Street and Davis was working as an undertaker. By 1926 he was working as a builder and carpenter again, and the family lived at Second Street and First Avenue. Davis continued to work as a carpenter and a self-employed contractor in the building industry. He and Amanda lived their last 30+ years together at their small wood-frame home at 318 South 11th Street in New Hyde Park.

Davis died in Meadowbrook Hospital in East Meadow, Long Island, age 72 at 3:20 p.m. 23 December 1961, of congestive heart failure, a heart attack, and arterialsclerotic heart disease, after spending five days in the hospital. His wife had died in the same hospital on his birthday three months earlier.
