Dorothea and her husband, Daniel Beyersdorf, may have been born in Ludwigshorst, Pomerania, Prussia (now northern Poland). She emigrated to the United States aboard the SS Britannia and arrived in New York on Oct 1, 1857. The passenger list shows her as being 59 years old, and in the company of her husband Daniel, son Carl Friedrich (age 30) and his wife Caroline and daughter Augusta; and son Wilhelm, (age 29). Ludwigshorst was the place listed as their prior residence.

The family traveled to Manitowoc county where they established themselves on a farm owned by Carl Friedrich in the Town of Maple Grove near Reedsville. Dorothea was referred to Sophie on the 1870 Census, and was listed as being 72 years old. she died sometime before the 1880 Census, but the exact year is not known.

Note: The spelling of the surname Baiersdorff is another variation found for the family, as is Beiersdorf but the most common is Beyersdorf.
