Barbara Ann Butler-Fluker, 46, of Pinellis County, FL, formerly of Camden, AR, a disabled former Army nurse who came home a champion from the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, passed away on July 24, 1999, at Bayfront Medical Center.

She was born in Camden, AR. She worked as a registered nurse at the Ouachita County Hospital there and first came here in 1975 from Magnolia, Ark. She joined the Army in 1978 and served as a nurse in the National Guard, Army Reserve, active Guard and Reserve.

Mrs. Fluker, who was disabled while serving in Operation Desert Storm. The Desert Storm veteran won gold in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

Stricken by a seizure at home, she was believed to have suffered a stroke or a heart attack, her husband said Monday.

At the Wheelchair Games in Seattle in 1996, Mrs. Fluker, who was active in sports in high school and at Southern Arkansas University, won four gold medals and a bronze in discus, javelin, shot put, table tennis and air rifle, respectively.

"I wanted to do real well to see if I could still do it," she told a reporter. "And I did well. I surprised myself."

Injured trying to catch a falling patient while serving with the military in 1991, Mrs. Fluker was left with a serious spinal cord injury. She could not walk for nine months and used a wheelchair to cover long distances.

She was a board member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and also served with the Army Reserve Hospital Unit.

At Lake Maggiore Baptist Church, where her husband has been the pastor for four years, she was first lady of the church and served with the Women's ministry, the Children's Church ministry, and the Missionary Society.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Rev. Ronald Fluker, Sr; a son, Ronald Fluker, Jr of St. Petersburg; a daughter, Undria M. Fluker, of St. Petersburg; her parents, Barbara Butler and Henry Lee Butler of Camden; two sisters, Leah Biley, West Monroe, LA and Doris Barnes, Chicago; and her paternal grandmother, Lizzie Butler, Camden.

The memorial services will be held in Lake Maggiore Baptist Church, 4100 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. S, St Petersburg, FL. The burial services will be held at Royal Palm Cemetery South, St Petersburg, FL.

The family is under the care of Smith Funeral Home, 1534 18th Ave. S
