David James Samples, Jr., of Elmo, passed away peacefully on November 6, surrounded by his family. David was born Dec. 7, 1945 in Terrell, Texas to David Sr., and Pauline (Myers) Samples, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of Elmo and he served as both foreman and Commissioner of Pct. 3 for Kaufman County after which he retired. David loved mowing and doing anything on his tractor. He kept a spotless front yard and he enjoyed being outdoors taking care of the land around his home and his cows. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and his generosity to always help anyone with their work was a assurance of his solid work ethic and character.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Lyons Samples of Elmo; her children: John Hall, Greg Hall and wife Roxanna, Debi Manson and husband Don, Nancy Crow and husband Terry; grandchildren: Marcus Allen, Neal Crow, Jonathan Hall, Jennifer Allen, Carl Crow, Teri "Toodles" Crow, and Kristy Hall; great grandchildren: Antonio DeLeon, Colby McBarron, Raegan Crow, Kennedy Chasak, and Drake Crow; sister, Margaret Armstrong and husband, Larry; nephews: Keith Armstrong and wife Stephanie and Chris Armstrong and wife, Kim; great-niece, Jaelyn and his beloved dog, Socks as well as other extended family and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be at 11:00am, Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Anderson-Clayton Bros. Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Elmo Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8pm, Friday, November 8, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorials in David's name may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation at www.melanoma.org.
