Boyd was the fifth child of Lester and Ada Burgess Austin. Boyd was a very talented musician and played many instruments. He loved to play and sing old hymns. Prior to WWII, he and his brothers were Grand Ole Opry bound but Boyd and each of his brothers joined the military and the dream ended. Boyd joined the Army on September 2, 1944.

Sometime after the war, he and two of his brothers started Austin Printing in Monroe on Morgan Mill Road. Later in life he raised turkeys. He was married to Catherine Carter Austin with whom he had two children: Claudia and Jimmy. In the late 1980s, he married Linda Tice Taylor with whom he lived until he died. At the time of his death, he was cremated and his second wife Linda kept his ashes in her possession. At the time of this writing, she still had possession of his ashes.
