John Reed Dixon a Telegraph operator and Grandson of Father John Dixon founder of this city, entered into the service of his country in the final year of the "War of the Rebellion". John enlisted/joined, on May 16, 1864 in Chicago, Illinois by C.E. Lincoln. He was mustered into service at Camp Fry, Illinois on May 31, 1864 as a Private with Co. "A" of the 134th Illinois Infantry Regiment. The 134th, was organized at Camp Fry, Chicago, Illinois, and mustered in for 100 days May 31, 1864. Moved to Columbus, Kentucky, June 6-8. Attached to District of Columbus, Kentucky and Garrison duty at Columbus till October. John, mustered out of service at Memphis Tennessee on September 8, 1864. The rest of the Regiment was mustered out October 5, 1864. The 134th Regiment lost during service, 1 Officer and 20 Enlisted men by disease, for a total 21.
