United States Army Officer. Instrumental in the Platte purchase, which added to Missouri's land. He refused an order to execute Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saints Church, saying it would be cold blooded murder. He also refused appointed posts in both the Union and Confederate armies saying that he wanted to remain out of the war between the states and hoped that Missouri would remain neutral. Inducted into the Fort Leavenworth Hall of Fame for his military exploits.
