Thelma Frances Logan was born April 10, 1919 in Cincinnati Township (Tazewell County), Illinois. She was the third of three children born to Gilbert Logan and Ella Vaupel who married in 1914. Older brother John "Les" Logan was born in 1915, and brother Gilbert, Jr was stillborn in 1917.
Less than a year after her birth, Thelma would lose her beautiful mother, Ella, to pulmonary tuberculosis. Because Gilbert felt incapable of caring for two small children, they were sent to live with Ella's sister Mary Ann (Vaupel) Young and husband George who raised them like their own. Even when Gilbert remarried to Euphrosyne Ingersoll, the children remained with their aunt and uncle as their stepmother reportedly did not want the kids around.
