Mrs. Joe Knox Gilbreath, Sr., 66, died at 11 o'clock Sunday night, March 10, at Giles County Hospital after suffering a heart attack early the previous Friday.
Funeral services were conducted at Bennett-May Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. R. Neal Dean, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. William H. Moss, pastor of First Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Giles Memory Gardens.
The former Miss Pauline Shearin, daughter of the late Horace and Ellen Morgan Shearin, she was born Sept. 12, 1896, in Bedford County. She was graduated from Morgan School at Fayetteville and Martin College, Pulaski.
Well known throughout this area as an outstanding newspaper reporter, she began her writing career in 1929 as Giles County correspondent for The Nashville Tennessean and later became the local reporter for The Nashville Banner, a position she held at the time of her death.
During the period between August, 1942, and March 12, 1961, she was employed for a total of more than fifteen years as editor for The Pulaski Citizen; having previously held a similiar position with The Pulaski Record for a year and a half. During World War II, she served for a period on the staff of the local Ration Board.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and of Hillcrest Country Club.
In March, 1916, she was married to Joe Knox Gilbreath, who survives. A retired postal worker, Mr. Gilbreath served as assistant postmaster at the Pulaski Post Office.
Other survivors are three sons, Joe K. Gilbreath, Jr., of Nashville, Jack H. Gilbreath of Chattanooga and Robert F. Gilbreath of Jackson; a half-brother, Clifton Shearin of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Mary Jacqueline and Kenneth Gilbreath of Chattanooga and Robert Floyd Gilbreath, Jr. of Jackson.
