John Z. Meigs was the son of Jonathan Meggs and his first wife Emeline Forte (her maiden name of "Forte" is from son Hosea Meggs' death certificate. Some researchers show her maiden name as "Faulk" or "Swink"). John Z. Meigs was 1 of 10 children born to this couple. After Emeline's death about 1857, her husband Jonathan Meggs remarried to Ann Elizabeth Adcock in 1858. They went on to have 6 children together.

John Z. Meigs used the spelling "Meigs" as his surname as did his son Horace Eugene Meigs. John Z. Meigs' father Jonathan's last name is spelled "Meggs" on his headstone in North Carolina. Some of Jonathan's sons used the spelling "Meigs" as their surname and some used "Meggs" as they became adults. Even though John Z. Meigs used the spelling of "Meigs", some of the census records show it as "Meggs".

Most records only show the middle initial "Z" for John Meigs, however, the delayed birth certificate for his daughter Cora Alice Meigs showed her father's name as "John Zackary Taylor Meggs".

An early trancription of the Antioch cemetery where John is buried showed that John Z. Meigs (Meggs) had a headstone, however a survey in 2013 by this contributor could not find one.
