Peter A. DeTroye, 76, of Kiel died Friday evening January 7, 2022 at St. Nicholas Hospital. He was born February 20, 1945 in Sheboygan, son of the late Harley and Hilda (Goebel) DeTroye. He grew up in Kiel and was a 1963 graduate of Kiel High School. He furthered his education at UW LaCrosse, Manitowoc County Teachers College and received his degree from UW Oshkosh.

On November 16, 1968 he was united in marriage to Jean Pethan at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. Pete was an elementary school teacher for 7 years in Chilton while he finished his schooling. He worked for Kohler as an engineer for 18 years and was the plant manager at J.L. French Co., Sheboygan for 7 years. He also worked for Stecker Machine and Freis Distributing for a short time before his retirement in 2002.

At a young age, Pete developed a lifelong love for cars, street rods, muscle cars and drag racing. He was a long time drag racer, building several cars for the strip. He shared that love of cars with all his sons but especially with his oldest son, Eric. Many of his longest and best friendships were with his drag racing buddies and their families. Pete and his son Mike took several trips to visit his drag race friends and watch them compete at local race tracks. He was skilled in all aspects of designing, building and showing some of the best muscle cars. His crown jewel was the 1971 Monte Carlo which his son Eric started to build. Pete finished it after Eric's death as a tribute to him. The car went on to win numerous local trophies and major awards in California after he sold it. He owned and operated Pete's Mobil in Kiel for 7 years, Pete's Performance for many years and was involved with other ventures in the hot rod world. Until just recently he was still designing, manufacturing and selling parts for vintage engines, blowers and cars through his shop, Eastside Garage. That company shipped parts to the entire US and 12 countries. Pete was well know for his vast knowledge of vintage engines. He enjoyed anything mechanical, building engines and going to swap meets to buy and sell parts, He was a former member of several car clubs and enjoyed attending car shows not only as a participant but to see the newest cars at each show.

On May 26, 2003, Pete was given the gift of life through a liver transplant. He used the last 19 years of that gift to see his family grow to include 5 grandchildren. He was their biggest fan at sporting events, dance, community theater and school activities. Pete was an excellent cook, always wanting to try new recipes and new ways of cooking. Together with his wife Jean, they traveled to 48 states. In his younger days he played semi-pro football with the Sheboygan Redwings. He took great pride in watching his son David also play semi-pro football for the Sheboygan County Rebels years later. Pete's greatest love was his family. He struggled when his son Eric died unexpectedly, but he was grateful to see his two other boys grow and become successful and raise families of their own. He will be missed by all who knew him.
