MR. MICHAEL JOHN CONDON.
It came as a great shock to his relatives and friends when news came to hand early on Thursday morning, 18th June, that Farrier Sergeant Michael Johm Condon had been found dead in a military camp on the North Coast early that morning, from heart trouble. It was not until his mates discovered that he was not astir that they ascertained the cause. Apparently it had been thought that he was in his usual state of good health, and his sudden death was all thegreater shock. The deceased was ason of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Condon, of Kangaroo Valley, and his wife (nee Lorna Hammond, of Taree) is, together with her two children, Maureen and John, resident in Nowra, and it would be hard to realise the shock that the young widow received when the sad news was flashed to her by the military authorities. The late Mr. Condon, who was just on 40 years of age, was a fine type of manhood, and there was no place in which he was held in higher esteem by the people than those of his native district.
Kangaroo Valley, where he grew up to manhood; it was there he first became associated with military matters, some years ago, being a wonderful marksman with the rifle, and as an equestrian in the Light Horse had few equals and 110 superiors, and better perhaps than all was the love and regard in which he was held by his fellows of the Kangaroo Valley LightHorse Troop, a body of men who excelled themselves in winning the
Prince of Wales Cup — an outsize in silverware.
He was well-known in Nowra and up till quite recently was engaged with the firm of Harrison's, of Nowra, as a traveller for machinery. He had followed that occupation on the North Coast for a time, prior to which he had engaged in a blacksmithing business on his own account at Kangaroo Valley.
He was of a lively disposition, hail fellow well met, the picture of health, which seemed to make his comparatively sudden demise all the more sad. He had only been married eight years, and to his sorrowing widow, and two young children, we join with the rest of the community in offering our deepest regret. Also to his parents, and brothers Bill, Ted and Tom, and sister Eileen (Mrs. T. Rendall, of Kangaroo Valley).
The body was brought to Kangaroo Valley for interment, and prior to moving off from Wingham (N.C.), a guard of honor was formed by the military. The mortal remains were laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the Kangaroo Valley public cemetery on Friday last, the last sad rites being conducted by the Rev. Father O'Flaherty, who was assisted by the Rev. Pegerum where many old friends were in attendance to pay their last tribute of respect.— "Nowra Leader."
