Alfred L. "Al" Pfeifer, 86, Hays, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at his home. He was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Hyacinth to Frank A. and Mary (Seib) Pfeifer.

He was a 1947 graduate of Boys Town, Omaha, Neb. He was a former Mayor of Boys Town. He learned the pressman's trade at Boys Town and chose that as his profession. He was a pressman in Hays for 12 years, in Colorado Springs, Colo., for 10 years and in Reno, Nev., for 20 years, retiring from the Pressman's Union after 42 years of service.

He married Lillian Hoffman on June 1, 1949, in Hays.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 1325. He enjoyed crosswords and was an avid Royals, Chiefs and Broncos fan.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays; two sons, Tom Pfeifer and Larry Pfeifer; two brothers, George Pfeifer, Omaha, and Marvin "Lefty" Pfeifer and wife, Carol, Salina; a sister, Bernice Rhea and husband, Dick, Sharon Springs; many nieces and nephews; and his pet parrot of 30 years, Buddy.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald; three brothers, Bob, Francis, and Eugene; and a sister, Velma Dreiling.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Boys Town or St. Joseph Catholic Church, in care of the funeral home.
