WESTMINSTER, Calif. — James Michael "Mike" Newland died July 1, 2009, in Westminster, Calif. His quiet strength and faith will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Mike was born Oct. 10, 1952, in Connersville, Ind., the son of James E. and Patricia R. Newland.

Mike graduated from South Hills High School in Covina, Calif., and from Central Michigan University. He also attended Princeton Seminary.

He was a buyer for Robinson-May Department Stores until severe Juvenile Diabetes forced his retirement in 1996. Later, he worked part-time teaching special needs children for the Traverse City Area Public Schools.

Mike was an accomplished musician, playing guitar and singing. He composed many Christian and secular songs. He performed with "The Sound Of Faith" during his high school and college years. He also enjoyed church choirs in California and Traverse City, and sang with and served as business manager for Cherry Capital Chorus.

He is survived by both of his parents; his wife, Gail; children, Joseph Newland, on duty with the U.S. Coast Guard in San Diego, Calif., and Melissa Newland of Houston, Texas; sister, Debbie (Ken) Ruggeone of Lake Forest, Calif.; brother, Jeff (Susan) Newland of Traverse City; step-daughter, Shayna (Kevin) Stiles; beloved step-granddaughters, Samantha and Kaitlin Stiles; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A private memorial service will be held Aug. 1 in Traverse City, with interment in the Midland City Cemetery.
