Sandra Sexton Benson, 65 of Huntsville passed away Feb. 15 following a massive stroke.
Since 1981, Mrs. Benson worked with the U.S. Army in positions critical to the development of air defense and command and control systems.
At the time of her death, she was Special Projects Officer.
From 1990 to 2006, she was Program/Acquisition Managerand Chief, Program Management Division in the Air Defense Command and Control Systems Project Office. She previously held positions as Supervisory Industrial Engineer; Chief, Systems Analysis and Evaluation; and Operations Research Analyst. She previously worked for the Bendix Corporation as Business Manager, Senior Engineer and Statistician providing launch support to the Shuttle, Skylab, and Apollo/Saturn Programs at Kennedy Space Center, Florida and Marshall Space Flight Center, Alabama.
Mrs. Benson was a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows Program, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and the Federal Executive Institute. She earned a B.S. degree in mathematics and science from Rollins College and an M.B.A. degree from Stetson University. She was a member of several professional organizations. She received exceptional performance awards for nearly 20 consecutive years and was awarded the U.S. Army's Superior Civilian Service Award in 1995. Other awards included the Air Defense Artillery's Honorable Order of Saint Barbara and selection to Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in Engineering and Science and Who's Who in America.
She was a Master Gardener and active member of the Huntsville Botanical Garden. She was a member of the Hunt Springs Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and shared an interest in genealogy and history.
She was a patron and avid fan of the University of Alabama at Huntsville ice hockey team. She was a supporter and subscriber to the Huntsville Symphony, a member of Huntsville's Broadway Theater League, a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, a hostess for many groups, and an exceptional bridge player and interior decorator.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Taze and Margaret Cornett Sexton; and her brother, Charles Lewis Sexton.
