LT William Wirt Fleming was a U. S. Army officer born in Kentucky and appointed from Missouri to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1862. He graduated in the Class of 1866, 37th of 41, and spent eleven years in the Army, serving with the 6th Infantry in Southern garrisons until 1869, then six years with the 12th Infantry in various garrisons in Arizona, among them Fort Yuma, often considered at the time to be the most remote and dismal in the country. His last year was spent at Angel Island and Alcatraz Island, California: he was dismissed June 30, 1877 pursuant to General Court Martial Order No. 52, Army General Orders 1877, June 11, 1877, having been found guilty on several counts of embezzlement from the government, theft of money entrusted to him for safekeeping by civilians and enlisted men, and lying to his superior officers. He was convicted to three years hard labor in the Iowa State Penitentiary, of which he served two years, the rest being remitted.

The details of his post and unit assignments and promotions are given in Cullum's Register of the Graduates of the United States Military Academy, under #2151, Vol. 3 and Supplements, Vols. 5‑6. The entries are online at Thayer's site on the History of West Point. Of his life after his military service, neither the Association of Graduates nor I have any information.
