Carl Mahder was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on October 22, 1911. As a child he attended a rural, one room schoolhouse. He later attended Ohio State University and Georgetown Law School, where he graduated in 1940.
During World War II, he served on the staff of Gen. Lucius Clay in France. At the end of the war Carl became
involved with European reconstruction efforts as the US economics, legal and de-nazification officer for the
American Zone of Occupation in Germany. After his discharge from the army with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1947, he continued to serve with the military government in Germany as Special Assistant to the Director of the
Economic Co-operation under the Marshall Plan until 1957. During his next State Department assignment, to Turkey,
Carl met Audrey Larabee, who was then on the US Embassy staff. They were married in 1967. Following his retirement in 1968 from his post as an Economics Officer in Turkey, the Mahders returned to the US and settled in Bethesda.
Carl joined Bethesda United Church of Christ in 1970.1n 1974, he was elected Treasurer, a position he would hold
for the next 33 years. The congregation recognized his able and faithful service as treasurer with a special award presented in 1981 and by naming a room at the church for him. In October of 2011, BUCC honored Carl's 100th birthday with a celebration. He remained an active participant in church affairs and attended the 2012 Annual Leadership Retreat.
Carl was also active in the Potomac Chrysanthemum Society. Carl is survived by Audrey(Larabee) Mahder, his wife of 45 years, of Gaithersburg, and his sister, Hilda Boehler 99, of Abington, PA.
