Born in Ireland, George immigrated to the United States about 1855. The death record for William Morrison (son of George and Katherine) lists Scotland as George's birthplace. This conflicts with most other records pertaining to George himself.

George mustered in as a Private in Company A, 11th Vermont Infantry on September 1, 1862. He was taken prison of war at Weldon Railroad on June 23, 1864, and taken to Andersonville prison. He was sent to Millen, Georgia on November 11, 1864, then paroled on February 28, 1865. He mustered out June 24, 1865.

After returning to Vermont, George worked for the E. & T Fairbanks Company in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. He married Catherine in 1870. The family lived on what was then known as road 44, before moving to Waterford in 1873.

"Of him, we may truly say,he was highly respected by his fellow citizens, he was an obliging and kind neigbor, an indulgent and tender father, a true and devoted husband, and a loyal and helpful member of the Congregational church, of which he has been a member for years." St. Johnsbury Caledonian (St. Johnsbury, Vermont) November 21, 1906.
