Mary was born at Montville, Medina County, Ohio, December 26, 1830, and was a daughter of George and Lois Bates Chapman, the former a native of New York. Mary had taught school during her younger days. At Osceola, Marion County, in May, 1854, Mary S. Chapman married William Dowling. She and William had seven children: Rosa A., the wife of William Williamson, a commission merchant of Buffalo, New York; Hattie F., now Mrs. J. L. Williamson, of Freeport, Ohio; Flora O., wife of Rev. G. T. Camp, a minister of the Disciples Church at Council Grove, Kansas; Frank M., who is a minister of the same church, and is now located at Pomona, California William E., a farmer in Wood County; Alla M., wife of Rev. Charles M. Kreidler, who is pastor of the Disciples Church at Lansingburg, New York; and Clarence E., a farmer of Montgomery Township, Wood County. Mary was a member of the Disciples Church. She died from paralysis at the age of 62 years 7 months and 3 days.
