John Newton, aged 78 years, died at his home, about one-half mile north of Clifford, at 7:30 o'clock Sunday evening. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. H. Book, pastor of the Tabernacle Christian Church in this city, interment being in the Liberty Cemetery.
Mr. Newton is survived by the widow and nine children: William Newton of Indianapolis; A. C., Alonzo, George, and Clarence Newton of Clifford; John Newton of near Franklin; Mrs. Thomas Dodd of St. Louis Crossing, and Mrs. W. B. Linke and Mrs. Curtis Hill of Clifford.
Mr. Newton was a member of the local G.A.R. Post, having been a veteran of the Civil War, a member of the Thirty-Third Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was also a member of the Masonic and Knights of Pythias orders. He had been trustee of Flatrock Township some twenty-five years ago, and had spent the greater part of his life in the Clifford community, dying on the farm where he was born. In his death the community loses a good, and respected citizen.
