Known as the "Father of Greene County" Colonel John Minor was responsible for enacting the law that created Greene County on February 9th 1796.

Minor was born on January 5th 1747, in Winchester, Virginia to Stephen and Athalia (Updike) Minor. The Minor Family can trace their lineage back to Thomas Minor who came to the New World in 1629 aboard the Ship "Lyon's Whelp" and eventually settled in Stonington, Connecticut where he died in 1690.

John Minor and his Brother William were among the earliest settlers in Greene County, having been well established by the 1770's.

In April of 1777, he was commissioned by Zachariah Morgan and John Evans to take command at Statler's Fort (Near Pentress) on Dunkard Creek, where he enlisted soldiers to help defend the local population from Indian Attack.

Minor also built and operated one of the earliest Mills in the area, and is said to have supervised the construction of Boats for General George Rodgers Clark.

By 1798, John Minor owned a Large Two Story Log House with a separate Log Kitchen that was situated on a large tract of land.

He spent his last years in Greensboro where he died December 5th 1833.

There has been much research done into the life and times of Colonel John Minor and this is only a brief biography. Every history of Greene County that has been written in the last 150 years covers him extensively and makes for very interesting reading.

This marker is broken and very badly eroded, and only his name can be made out.
