John served with Company C of the 8th Vermont Regiment during the Civil War. He mustered in on August 31, 1864. John was wounded at the battle of Cedar Creek (also known as the Battle of Belle Grove) on October 19, 1864. John passed away after the arm was amputated at the US Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
It has been suggested that John was buried in Louden Park National Cemetery in Baltimore, and that the gravestone in West Waterford Cemetery is a cenotaph. As of March, 2016, the National Cemetery Administration's Nationwide Gravesite Locator(U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) does not include a record for John's burial in a National Cemetery.
