"Louis received an eighth-grade education in the Mayview School System. He was a member of the Evangelical Church in Mayview. Louis and Lena's parents were charter members of the German Evangelical Church.
He worked on his father's farm as a young man, and at the age of 20 years he worked in the Mayview Creamery. He entered a butter making contest at the St. Louis Fair and won the first premium for the best butter, receiving a medal. He was also in the hardware,tin ware, harness and implement business.
After he married he bought a farm north of Higginsville and lived there until 1946."
