The family story has it that Elijah was left on the doorstep of Capt. Thomas who subsequently raised him.
For that reason, in Elijah's account to Draper, Elijah refers to Captain Thomas Callaway as "the author's father".
This has proven a problem for subsequent DAR applications as the correct service for Thomas Jr. has not yet been proven.
