Wife of Sam Lay

"I was born in the state of Indiana, 27 Dec. 1825. I was the oldest child of Rev. David H. Davis. When I was about one year old, my parents moved to Tennessee. I lived in Lawrence County until I was grown. In Feb. 1842 I was married to Samson Lay. We lived in Lawrence County until we had grown children. I am the mother of nine children, all lived to be grown except one. Six are still living in Hardin and Wayne counties. My husband died just about the time of the surrender in April 1865. I tried to raise my children as near right as I knew how, and tried to teach them how to be honest and good. All but two of my children are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. I have been a member of the church forty years. My father and mother both died in their 84th year. My father was a minister about 55 years.
My health is good for one of my age. I can see to read and write without glasses. I have 45 living grandchildren and about 36 living great grandchildren.
I am now living with my only daughter at Olive Hill. My address is Olive Hill, Tennessee." This article is from the Clifton Mirror Newspaper.
