Hotchkiss, James Kennan
James Kennan Hotchkiss, a Chicago investment counselor and long-time resident of Hinsdale, died August 21, 2008, while on vacation with his family in northern Wisconsin. He was 80.
Mr. Hotchkiss was born in Berwyn and raised in Highland Park. He was the son of the late Eugene and Jeanette Hotchkiss, and the nephew of the late George F. Kennan, the diplomat and Pulitzer-Prize winning author, and the nephew of Kent W. Kennan, the winner of the Prix de Rome, composer and author. He graduated from Vermont Academy, then graduated with his two brothers from Dartmouth College in 1950. He also earned an MBA from the University of Chicago, and held the C.F.A. and C.I.C. designations.
After service as an officer in the Navy from 1950-1953, Mr. Hotchkiss returned to Chicago, where he worked as a financial analyst for United Airlines. He then became an investment counselor at Stein, Roe & Farnham, where he was a partner and member of the Executive Committee. In 1970, he founded Hotchkiss Associates to provide investment counsel to individual and institiutional clients. He was still working for his clients at Hotchkiss Associates at the time of his death. he was widely known for his integrity, personal service, and caring for his clients. He took particular pride in helping non-profit and charitable organizations grow their resources to do their work. His clients often became his personal friends.
Mr. Hotchkiss was active over his entire professional life in civic and charitable work. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago and a Life Trustee of the Nature Conservancy's Illinois Chapter, where he had also served as Chairman. In 1996, the national Nature Conservancy awarded him its highest honor for leadership and service, the Oak Leaf Award. He had also served as a Trustee of Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. He had been a member of the Chicago Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Wayfarers, and the University and Mid-Day Clubs.
In 1959, Mr. Hotchkiss moved with his family to Hinsdale. He was active in civic life, serving as Chairman of the Trustees of the Public Library, and Vice-Chairman of the Plan Commission. He led referendum campaigns for new facilities for Hinsdale Central High School, the Library, and for the initial funding for the College of DuPage. He was also a Trustee of the Hinsdale Opera Theater.
Mr. Hotchkiss was an avid outdoorsman and very competitive athlete. He skied with his children and grandchildren until he was well into his 70s. He loved to canoe the lakes and walk the back roads around his cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin, and explore the fields and prarie grasslands of the family's farm in Franklin Grove.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Nancy McCoy; his children Carolyn (Kathy Cole), Laura (Mark) Capaldini, John (Ingrid), and Anne (Steve) Janzer; and his six grandchildren, Lia, Nick, Graham, James, Emily and Mark. He is also survived by his older brother Frank (Kay Lindahl) and his twin brother Eugene (Suzanne), the President Emeritus of Lake Forest College.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 29th, 2008, at the Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield St., Hinsdale, IL 60521 630-323-4303. Interment will be private. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Nature Conservancy Illinois Chapter, 8 S. Michigan Ave. Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60603.
