HASTINGS JONES Hastings Jones, b May 25,1815 in Dallas County, Alabama, d August 24, 1878 at Reagan, Falls County,Texas and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery - is traditionally said to be a son of Matthew Jones of North Carolina. Several records refer to Hastings Jones as "Hastin Jones." He married first on December 29, 1839 in Dallas County, Alabama to Martha Goodman, b February 25, 1825, d February 3, 1850 in Warren, Bradley County, Arkansas. Hastings and Martha (Goodman) Jones had four children: Margaret Ann Jones, b August 17, 1841 in Alabama. No further information. Wesley A. Jones, b September 28, 1844 in Mississippi. James Monroe Jones, b January 28, 1847 in Arkansas. Joanna Frances Jones, b May 29, 1849 in Arkansas, d there November 6,1849. On October 20, 1850 in Bradley County, Arkansas, Hastings Jones married second to Mary Ann Hanna (some records record "Hannah"), b January 22,1825 (some records say she was born in Tennessee, while others give Carroll County, Georgia as her birthplace) - a daughter of Alexander and Rosanna Hanna (or Hannah) who had moved into Bradley County, Arkansas. Hastings and Mary Ann (Hanna or Hannah) Jones had six children - all born in Bradley County, Arkansas: Mary Rosanna Jones (called "Babe"), b August 8, 1851- married William B. DeWalt. Alexander L. Jones (called "Zan"), b March 11, 1853 - married Elizabeth (called "Eliza") Cornelison, b January 1, 1858. William Mortimer Jones (called "Mort"), b August 3, 1854. Sarah Jane Jones, b December 1, 1855, d December 29, 1855. Alonzo Pennington Jones (called "Lon"), and in later life called "A. P. ", b December 3, 1856 - married Mary Lydia Cornelison (called "Mamie"), b April 1, 1866. Ann Eliza Jones (called "Annie"), b December 26, 1858 - married Samuel Fletcher Barclay. In 1860, Hastings Jones moved his family to Polk County, Texas, where he purchased 320 acres of land near the "Piney Woods." By 1870, he had again moved his family - settling in Falls County, Texas near the present-day Reagan community. On July 13, 1954, a grandson, Hastings L. Jones, wrote the following about his grandfather, Hastings Jones: ". . . He migrated from Arkansas in 1860 to Polk County, Eastern Texas. . . had wagon train, cattle, horses, all kind of stock. Also a large number of slaves . . . I can remember a lot of the old (former) slaves when I was 5 or 6 years old. Of course they were free then. . . They lived with the Joneses until death. Some of the (former) slaves, Rich, Matelda, Squares, all took the name of Jones." Hastings Jones and his second wife, Mary Ann, were both buried in the Blue Ridge Cemetery in Falls County.
