Piscataway man arraigned for strangling ex-companion, mother of their four children

Kevin Scuccimarri and Sherry Richardson had four children together, but their relationship had been rocky.

Today, Scuccimarri, 33, of Piscataway, appeared in Superior Court in New Brunswick accused of killing the 37-year-old Richardson and burying her body in a creek near his home. He is charged with murder and making terroristic threats. Richardson was Scuccimarri's former live-in companion.

Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Sheree Pitchford told Superior Court Judge Joseph Paone that Piscataway police discovered the homicide only after responding to reports that Scuccimarri had threatened his parents.

Pitchford said police went to the family home and learned that Scuccimarri had threatened to kill his parents. While at the house, officers then discovered Richardson had been killed, but the prosecutor's office will not say how police received that information.

Scuccimarri "strangled his ex-girlfriend," Pitchford said. "He pointed to where the body was buried,".

While in court, Middlesex County Assistant Deputy Public Defender Melissa Karabulut entered a not guilty plea for Scuccimarri.

Karabulut asked for a reduction in Scuccimarri's $1 million bail, saying her client had only minor disorderly persons offenses on his record and that the couple's children lived with him. She said Scuccimarri's father was at the hearing.

Pitchford opposed the request and Paone refused to reduce bail.

Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew Carey said officers found Richardson's body about 3:47 p.m. Tuesday in a creek near Blueberry Court and Knightsbridge Road in Piscataway. He said Richardson had been living in Middlesex Borough.

Authorities did not release information about how long Richardson's body had been buried near the creek.

Richardson's sister, Mary Frances Doty, said Richardson's children range in age from 15 to 2.

"She was a good mom, a great sister. She was a hard worker," said Doty, who attended the brief court hearing.

Doty said her sister grew up in North Plainfield and had worked as a waitress.

She said Richardson and Scuccimarri had an "on-again, off-again relationship."
