Benjamin married Martha Gilson on January 10, 1856 in East St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The couple made their home there, raising two daughters and a son. Benjamin was a farmer, and known as a successful trapper.

Benjamin mustered in as a Private in Company I, 3rd Vermont Regiment on September 30, 1862. He was discharged due to disability on March 16, 1863.
