Robert "Bob" Stanley Watt, 93, of Duluth, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013.
Bob was born in Duluth Aug. 20, 1920, to Stanley and Elsie (Perry) Watt. He graduated from Morgan Park High School and lived in Gary for 57 years. Bob was a Veteran of World War II serving as a Staff SGT/Flight Engineer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed on several South Pacific Islands - Guadalcanal, Munda, Bougainville, Guam and Tinian from 1942-1945 for a total of four years. For their service Bob's squadron received a Presidential Citation.
Bob married Margaret Erickson of Duluth Aug. 3, 1946. He worked for U.S. Steel in Morgan Park, Air National Guard and owned and operated Richie's Drive Inn located in Morgan Park for 19 years. He also operated concession stands at the Duluth Curling Club during the winter months. He was the assistant food service manager at U.M.D. upon retiring in 1983.
Bob was a hockey enthusiast all of his life, and in the 1950's, he initiated and coached boy's hockey in the far western end of Duluth for 15 years. He attended all of the high school and college hockey games he could. Bob also enjoyed gardening and painting. Most of all he loved his cabin life and fishing with his friend, Ken, for 33 years.
Bob was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and its Sr. Viking Club, American Legion Post 71, New Duluth Sr. Coalition and a life member of V.F.W. Post 6320 which is now Post 137.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Joy Black and Shirley Watt; and an infant great-grandson Waylon Hutchins.
Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret; daughter Carol (Fred) Kostka of Port Orange, Fla., and their children, Derek of Rochester, Minn., Julie of Port Orange and Matt of Rochester; son Bill (Pamela) of Port Huron, Mich., and their children, Melissa (Scott) Fleet and Stephanie (Jason Cruciano of Port Huron, MI; son, Jim (Jody) of Island Lake and their children Jason of Duluth and Jenae (Travis) Hutchins of Minneapolis; great-grandchildren Courtney, Alexis and Steven Fleet, Addison and Elliana Cruciano, Ava Kostka, and Isla and Otto Hutchins.
Bob will be sadly missed by his family and friends including his grandkids who he adored.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Luke's hospice for all of their care during the last five months.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Zion Lutheran Church, 2431 W. Third St., Duluth.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard.
Interment will be held at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery. The family wishes for memorials to be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, Duluth Heritage Sports Center or St. Luke's Hospice.
