James was the son of the Rev. James Charles Hale and Mary Georgina Rashleigh (there were many Vicars on both sides of his family).
He was the Vicar of Boxley from 1908, at the beginning of WWI and wrote fantastic letters in the Parish Magazine, encouraging his parishioners in the War effort. He was involved with Naval Intelligence in the North Sea, before being posted to France as a Chaplain to the Wessex Regiment, where he continued to write back to Boxley. In 1934 he became the Vicar of Yalding, where he is buried (near to the path, his grave is about 6ft long, flat to the ground) with a cross on it, next to a similar grave.
