John mustered in as a Corporal in Company C of the 8th Vermont Infantry on February 18, 1862. He re-enlisted in January, 1864, and was promoted to Sargeant before being commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in February, 1864. He mustered out June 28, 1865.
An obituary was published in St. Johnsbury Republican (St. Johnsbury, Vermont) on November 11, 1896 : "He did good service for our country, as he was promoted twice, first as sergean, and aferwards as first lieutenant. He had been a long time suffererfrom a compicationof diseases contracted while inthe service, and for three years has been totally blind. "
John lived and died in what was then known as West Concord, and now as Concord Village (Find A Grave does not recognize Concord Village as a place).
