On September 21, 1862, Hollis mustered in as a Private in Company G, 4th Vermont Infantry. He was discharged due to disability on July 5, 1862. He re-enlisted, and mustered in as a Private, Co. M, 11th Vermont infantry, on October 7, 1863. He served as Sargent, Sargent Major, and Lieutenant in Companies A, M, and D before mustering out on August 25, 1865.

While in service, Hollis was engaged in battles at Cold Harbor,, Spottsylvania, Petersburg, and Cedar Creek.
