On April 12, 1862, Alex mustered in as a Private in Company E, 6th Regiiment, Vermont Infantry. He re-enlisted on March 21, 1864, and transferred to Company K in October. Alex mustered out June 26, 1865. During his service, he participated in more than a dozen battles, including Bull Run (First Manassas), South Mountain, and Antietam.

From his obituary: "At the start of the Civil War Mr. Livingstone enlisted as a private and participated in 12 of the most important battles of the war and was honorably discharged on June 26, 1865." (St. Johnsbury Caledonian. November 06, 1912)
