William served as a Hospital Steward with the 3rd Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in July 16, 1861, and mustered out July 27, 1864.
In July, 1866, William was traveling to the then territory of Montana. He was a passenger on the steamer Gallatin, which became disabled while navigating the Missouri River. William was hit by a moving part on a capstan, and died from the resulting injury.
