son of James Folsom and Agnes Sanborn (transcript of death record).
Graduate of Medical Department of Dartmouth College, 1850.
Practiced medicine in Guildhall,Vermont before moving to Lancaster, New Hampshire. He represented Lancaster in the New Hampshire Legislature.
He relocated to St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 1872.
During the Civil War, James served as a surgeon with the 17th New Hampshire Infantry from November 4, 1862 to April 16, 1863.
An obituary was published in the St. Johnsbury Caledonian on June 26, 1907. The book History of the New Hampshire Surgeons in the War of the Rebellion (Granville P. Conn, Ira C. Evans Co. printers, Concord New Hampshire 1906) contains additional information on James Folsom.
