Although the 'founder' of Ewenny Priory, his bellicose nature made Maurice the recipient of a papal bull dated Apr. 19, 1128 by Honorius II, denouncing Maurice as a despoiler of church lands, and solemnly warning that he would be excommunicated if he didn't repent of his evildoings and make full restitution.

Being disrespectful of church property was definitely not the worst of his faults. He was guilty of capturing the Welsh noble woman Gwenllian, wife of Gruffudd ap Rhys and daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan, and beheading her in the courtyard of his castle at Kidwelly. In retribution her brothers Owain Gwynedd and Cadwaladr, destroyed the castle of Aberystwith in 1135 and executed its entire garrison.
