She was born March 18, 1913, at Bemidji, the daughter of Otto and Fleety (Barrett) Ashby. She attended country school in Puposky and graduated from Bemidji High School. She attended Bemidji State Teachers College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught two years before her marriage to Frank L. Schauls June 16, 1934, at Bemidji. She lived the remainder of her life in Bemidji where she raised her seven children, many plants and many birds. She also worked as a cook at Paul's Pantry in Bemidji.
She was a lifelong member of St. Philip's Catholic Church. Her life revolved around her family and the children of many families for whom she baby-sat.
Survivors include a son, Alfred, of Turtle River; five daughters, Marianna Rieg of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Catherine (Al) Gloe of Minnetonka, Minn., Geraldine (Dick) Bratlien and Janice (Richard) Christianson, both of Bemidji, and Vicki Martinson of New Hope, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Schauls, Helen Wohlrabe and Gertrude (Clifford) Ness, all of Bemidji; a brother, Homer (Beatrice) Ashby of Forest Lake, Minn., and Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975: a son, Steve, in 1980; and an infant granddaughter, Shiela Bratlien.
