Thomas B.Halley,59,chief of police in Phillipsburg since Sept 18,1947,died yesterday morning at his home,262 Mercer street,Phillipsburg,after an illness of two days.Mr.Halley joined the police force as a patrolman,Jan 16,1919.In Jan 1938,he was promoted to sergant,a post he held until his appointment as chief,succeeding Theodore Booth.
A native and life long resident of Phillipsburg,he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Prendergast Halley.He was a member of Sts.Philip and James Catholic Church,and the Holy Name Society of the church.He also held membership in the Phillipsburg Eagles;Jersey Hose Co,and the Exempt Fireman's Association,and was a life member of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association.
Survivors include his wife,the former Elsie Willever,at home;two sons,Thomas and Jerrold,both of Phillipsburg;and four daughters,Mrs.John J.Collins,of Bound Brook,N.J.and Mrs.Michael Luke,Mrs.David Pfeiffer and Mrs.Alden Smith,all of Phillsburg,also 13 grandchildren.The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m.from his home,with a solemn high mass in Sts Philip and James Church at 10 a.m.Burial will be in Sts Philip and James cemetery.
