Christy Lyn Wood, 35, of Pahrump, Nev., passed away on Oct. 7, surrounded by family and friends at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born on Oct. 13, 1977, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde Douglas Burum; son, Devin Wood; daughters, Kacidy Burum, Meghan Burum, and Katelynn Burum; grandchildren, Ayden Burum and MaKenzie Zendejas. She is also survived by her father, Steven Wood and his wife, Jennifer; mother, Mai Smith; mother-in-law, Carol Jones and her husband, Jeff; her siblings, Steven Wood and his wife, Christina, Penny Schatteman and her husband, Steve, and Jason McCormack and his wife, Stephanie; her nephew, Steven Wood; nieces, Ashley Freundner, Stephanie Freundner, and Rayna Wood; her aunt, Mary Saucier and her husband, Ed; uncles, Dean Wood and his wife, Kim, Mark Wood, and Rob Wood; cousins, Claudia Cruiz, Troy Wood and his wife, Jaime, Erin Clifton and her husband, Josh, Mark Saucier and his wife, Ashley, Matt Saucier and his wife, Emily, and Missy Saucier. She was preceded in death by her brother, Nicholas Ryan McCormack, and father-in-law, Clyde Dennis Burum.
As a military "brat," she spent time in Ohio, Guam, Texas, New Mexico and California. Christy was a 1996 graduate of Mojave High School in Mojave. During her high school years, she participated in track and field and was Homecoming Queen. She was quick to make friends due to her infectious smile and great sense of humor. Even during her final days with us, despite her condition, she found time to laugh, as well as make others laugh.
She was employed by the Corrections Corporation of America, where she started working at the California City Corrections Center and then transferred to CCA's Nevada Southern Detention Center.
She had great love for her husband and family, with her children bringing her the greatest joy. Throughout her treatments, she attended as many of their school and sporting events as she could. Christy had so wished that she could attend her son Devin's last home game at Pahrump High School in Nevada, on Oct. 10. Since that was going to be a challenge due to her health, KPVM Television in Pahrump planned to record the game and send it to us overnight for her to watch. After her passing, KPVM Television still plans to record that game for the family; and a portion will be aired during their newscast on Friday, Oct. 11, with a picture of Christy and a moment of silence at the end of that newscast.
The number of Christy's close friends all over the world are simply too many to mention here. Her sister, Penny, created Christy's Fight Club Facebook page that has over 300 friends who sent her daily messages of love and support, and continued after her passing. Her niece Stephanie Freundner has now created Christy's memorial group so that friends may join and leave memories of Christy for her family and friends.
There will be a viewing at the Community Church of California City, 21001 Conklin Blvd., on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. Her memorial service will follow at noon. Services will be officiated by Pastor Ron Sparks. A potluck gathering will be held later that day at 20609 California City Blvd., California City, between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. for friends and family to share memories of Christy. Parking will be available on the vacant lots on either side at that address.
