Joseph Dale Durfee of Burley, passed away at his home, at the age of 74.
Joe was a fun-loving, hard-working cowboy that was always quick with a joke. He was raised in Almo, Idaho. He received his education in Almo, Malta and Albion, graduating from Albion High School.
Joe loved horses and found much enjoyment in breeding and racing his prize Appaloosa horses. He rode in the Cassia County Mounted Posse for many years and had the honor of serving as captain. He loved to hunt deer and greatly enjoyed taking the grandchildren in his pickup to find their deer.
After being discharged from the Army, Joe began work for the Bureau of Land Management and retired as a range technician for the Burley District.
Through the years, he fought many fires in the surrounding areas. This job enabled him to roam the country he loved so much either by horseback or in his pickup. He traveled to many beautiful places including Japan and Alaska, but always said the most beautiful country he had ever seen was in Almo. His heart never left his home range. Even after retiring, Joe loved to drive around to see the country and check his cattle. He was well known for having his red heeler cow dogs in the back of his truck and slowing down traffic on the Declo highway.
Above all, the thing Joe loved the most was his family. He married Linda Wrigley of View, on Oct. 27, 1956, and later, they were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Joe was one of the last true cowboys and will be greatly missed.
Joe was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Durfee of Burley; his children, LeNae Harrington (Darwin) of Blackfoot, Steven Durfee (Cindy) of Declo, Laura Metcalf of Burley and Jay Durfee (Shelly) of Caldwell; his siblings, Athea Jones of Dillon, Mon., Mark Durfee of Spokane, Beth Jones of Malta, Ila Webb of Pocatello and Curtis Durfee of Almo. He has 14 grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Jody Lynn Durfee; his parents, Leo and Mary Ann Durfee; a sister, Fern Jensen; his brothers, Wayne, Ivan and Ellis Durfee; and son-in-law, Kent Metcalf.
