John Radcliffe was born in Shepard's Green Upper Mill Saddleworth England. He came to the United States in May 1862 to live with his Grandmother and Uncles James, John and Thomas Radcliffe who owned the Radcliffe Bros. Woolen Mill in Oxford, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Matilda Brown of Oxford on March 20, 1864. He later moved to Ansonia and worked at American Brass Mill. John was also the Treasurer of the Fountain Hose Fire Company No. 1 for many years.
