Robert E. Bingham was born in Michigan to Allen and Joanna (McColiff) Bingham. According to the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Leoni, Jackson County, Michigan, he was listed as age 14 and deaf and dumb. At the age of 54, he was living with his sister and her husband, Ellen and Barton Gates, in Rockton, Illinois. Robert passed away on February 19, 1915 in Crandon, Wisconsin. He was buried in the Bingham family plot in Crandon Lakeside Cemetery with his brother, Henry Bingham's family.
