Lenora was the second daughter born to Lorenzo Dow and Lyddia Angeline Butcher Owensby. Her father, Lorenzo, was 40 and her mother, Lyddia, was 27 when Lenora was born.

Lenora had the Owensby family red hair and a strong personality to go with it. In 1899 she was married to Joseph Hardin Tennison by James Taylor, Justice of the Peace. There was a big barn dance at her family home for all the young people following the wedding. Some of those attending remember Old Dan Tucker being played at the dance and Lenora having her quilts on display in the family home.

Lenora and Joseph had four sons and two daughters together. They were to lose two of these children, a son and daughter, to typhoid within 6 weeks of each other.

After 15 years of marriage, Joseph died. Following his death, Lenora worked for and later married August "Gust" Bretch in 1932. There was over 20 years age difference between them. He also preceded her in death.

Lenora died on November 5, 1963, in Bremerton, Washington, at the age of 86.

Information for this biography was taken from the book "A Journey Through Time with the Owensby Family of North Carolina, Tennessee and the Midwest" by Emma Sue Owensby Davenport.
