Richard was born in Agana, Guam, to Elma and Jack Gillespie on July 6, 1925. The family settled in Menlow Park, Calif., in 1926. Richard attended school and graduated early in January 1944, and he enlisted in the Navy on Feb. 19, 1944. After completing six weeks of boot camp in Ferragut, Idaho, he reported for duty at Alameda Air Station. During his two-year enlistment, Richard spent shore leave at local dances and in movie houses. On one such night he asked a young girl behind the candy counter to say, "prunes." When she puckered her lips he stole a kiss and a romance began. After two years of courting Richard and Deloris were married on June 21, 1947. Richard moved his new bride to Lake Tahoe, Calif., where they celebrated their honeymoon in an Army tent. Richard gained employment with the Placerville Logging Company in Tahoe until the heavy snow was too deep for either work or camp! The couple moved to Belmont, Calif., and Richard started work on the night shift for Western Gear. During the day he ventured into business as the Gillespie Brothers Paving Company. After a 16-year successful run, the brothers parted ways and Richard began his second career with PG&E in Paradise, Calif. Richard and Deloris raised their family in Paradise, spending 18 years making friends and memories. At the age of 55, Richard celebrated his second of three retirements when he left PG&E and he and Deloris moved to Twin Falls, Idaho. Once here Richard worked as a mechanic, first at Durfee's Ranch in Wendell, and then at D-Bus Company in Twin Falls. After building his own home at West Magic Reservoir he retired for the third and last time to live a restful life. Of course his idea of restful meant being in control of a backhoe digging septic systems, excavation, trailer canopies, road maintenance and just plain having fun pulling vehicles out of mud or snow. Fact is, West Magic residents knew whenever Richard was working on the backhoe, because typically the phones weren't. Richard enjoyed the outdoor life and from the time he was able, he hunted, fished, camped, ice fished and rode motorcycle trails through the mountains. Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Deloris; his sons, Richard Tremaine Jr. and wife, Patty, Thomas and wife, Lisa, Loran and wife, Kay, and James and wife, Amy; his grandchildren, Dawn Kammer and husband, Jack, Tony Collins and wife, Suzy, Amy Gillespie-Oss and husband, Kevin, Tony Gillespie, Gretchen Scott and husband, Earl, Jamie Fieldeen and husband, John, Thomas Gillespie, Richard L. Gillespie, Rudy Gillespie, Joshua Gillespie, Christopher Gillespie and Travis Gillespie; and his great-grandchildren, Brandon Collins, April Morgan, Joey Morgan, Noelle Kammer, Tessa Kammer, Porter Collins, Alexandria Fieldeen, Evelyn Scott and Emma Oss. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jack Gillespie of Napa, Calif., and Bill Gillespie of Auburn, Calif.; and his grandson, David C. Gillespie of Twin Falls. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at White Mortuary, "Chapel by the Park." Cremation will follow at White Crematory. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at White Mortuary. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Burren West Lodge in West Magic. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in memory of Richard to Idaho Home Health and Hospice.• Published by the Times-News on Thursday, October 13, 2005
