Capt. Morgan made his fortune by creating a monopoly in oysters for the San Francisco Bay Area beginning in 1851, just two years after the start of the gold rush fever that brought thousands to Northern California. The Morgan Oyster Company had over 100 acres of oyster beds within the bay until pollution caused the operation to move north to Tomales Bay.
