Friends , relatives and a few loyal neighbors tiptoed quietly Thursday past a bronze-colored casket where lay the bodies of Mrs. Deliphene Downing and little Rainell. Mrs. Downing was attired in a French blue gold-trimmed dress, her daughter in a dress of baby blue velvet, with a white lace collar and blue ribbon. The child was clasped in the left arm of her mother, and the two appeared to be sleeping as an organ softly played hymns before and after the brief service in the Vanlerter Funeral Chapel. A few flowers lay on the casket-four baskets and a spray-hyacinths, daffodils, and other blooms of early Spring.

Quietly, with a trace of bitterness creeping into his voice, Rev. John Denchfield, pastor of Southlawn Church of God, said:"God forecast the deplorable depths to which man can sink, and He sent His Son to live among men and attempt to redeem them. Christ was crucified as redeption for the sins of man". "Despite this sacrifice, one murder is committed every 40 minutes thru-out the world. Apparently the teachings of Christ have not made an impression on the minds of men".

It was the Rev. Mr. Denchfield who preached the sermon a year ago last November when Mrs. Downing's husband, Rolland, victim of a truck-train accident was buried. He took his sermon Thursday from a phrase of St. Paul's- "without natural affection". "Even the recognized lower orders of life ,"he said "maintain a natural affection for one another. Not even the dumbest animals stoop to such bestiality as has been shown here. It is beyond the compassion of any person with a natural Christian love to believe a fellow human being fuilty of such vicious treatment of anyone, especially an innocent child". Following the brief service, a few stayed behind to talk quietly in the Chapel.

Friday morning, the casket will be closed on the mother and her child, and will start the journey back to Palisade, Ne. There it will be lowered Sunday afternoon into a grave in a churchyard cemetery, clear away from the scene of violence and heartbreak. Grand Rapids, Mich Press Friday, March 4, 1949.

Funeral Services were held Sunday afternoon at two o"clock from the Methodist Church in Palisade with the Rev. Glen W. Marshall in charge. Mesdames Viron Baxter, Dean Drotter, Ziba Abbuhl and George Simmons sand "Beyond the Sunset", Safe in the Arms of Jesus", and "Sometime We'll Understand". Pallbearers were Charley Romine, Kenneth Gates, Howard Bridgman, Bernard Modrell, Wayne Porter and Lyle Bodeman. Honorary pall bearers were Robert Romine, Wayne Gates, Leo Porter and Birl Modrell.
