LORAINE, Ill. -- Galen H. Pittman Sr., 90, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Loraine, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, in Austin.
He was born Nov. 12, 1915, a son of Henry Enoch and Myra Elizabeth Arnold Pittman. He married L. Velma Brinkley near Ewing, Mo., in 1937. This marriage produced one son, Galen H. Pittman Jr.
Mr. Pittman later married Barbara Cannon from Ohio and she survives. This marriage produced a son, Craig Pittman and a daughter, Sharon C. Pittman Planto.
Mr. Pittman graduated from high school in Mendon and was just finishing college when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became an airplane mechanics instructor and a bomber pilot until the end of the war.
After the war he taught school for awhile, then rejoined the U.S. Air Force. He later was assigned to the Strategic Air Command headquarters, Offutt Field, outside Omaha, Neb., then was reassigned to the NASA Aerospace Center in Houston for the remainder of his military career. He was in charge of hyperbaric chambers for the USAF. He retired in 1968 with 28 years of service. He retired on a Friday and the following Monday he reported for his same job but as a civilian in civilian clothes. He retired again in 1989 with 21 years of service as a civilian employee.
Survivors in addition to his wife Barbara, survivors also include a son, Galen H. Pittman Jr. and his wife, Carmiletta, of Fowler, and Carmiletta's four sons, Charles L. Howlett and wife, Julie, of Louisville, Ky., and families, Lawrence A. Howlett of Yukon, Okla., and families, Tracy S. Howlett and his wife, Becky, of LaGrange, Mo., and families, and Troy J. Howlett of Yukon; a son, Craig Pittman of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Sharon C. Pittman Planto and her husband, Steve, of Spring, Texas, and their sons, Chris and David Planto; and a sister, Gladys Dievert of the North Adams Home at Mendon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and a younger sister, Gloria Miller.
Services and burial were held in Austin, Texas.
