Joe Ellis Parks, 70, of Stuart, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.

He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on Nov. 7, 1942, to the late Joe Ewart Parks and Mary Taylor Parks.

In addition to his parents, Parks was preceded in death by a son, Joe Earle Parks; and three sisters, Gaylen Heberle, Margaret Ruth Cookman and Dana Nuss.

He retired with 30 years of service as an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration and had served as Pastor at Rome Missionary Baptist Church in Laurel Fork for 10 years.

He had served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church, and was a member of VFW Post 1115 in Hillsville.

Parks is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Russell Parks of the home;
one son and daughter-in-law, John Russell and Mary Ashley Parks of Asheville, N.C.;
three grandchildren, Kaegan Parks, William Parks and Anna Parks.

Funeral services for Parks were held Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Melton officiating.

Burial followed in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
